The Hollywood Reporter said that the Scottish actor is in final negotiations for the adaptation of the 1991 film, which originally starred Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze.

The Fast And The Furious's Ericson Core is directing the film, which is expected to shoot in the summer.

The plot - an FBI agent infiltrating a crime ring - and the names of the main characters are expected to remain the same.

But the new movie will be set in the international world of extreme sports instead of the Southern California surf scene, it has been revealed.

Gerard will play Bodhi, which was Pat rick Swayze's character in the original movie directed by Kathryn Bigelow.

Keanu Reeves recently ruled out making an appearance in a remake of the action thriller.

"Absolutely not. It's not my place," he said. "If they can find a way to do it that works out good, then God bless them."
