Michael Fassbender jokes about inspiration for Steve Jobs
Michael Fassbender proves he doesn’t mind a bit of friendly banter, as he quipped on the red carpet that he watched Ashton Kutcher for his latest role of Steve Jobs.
The actor has apparently ruffled some feathers thanks to his joke about playing the legendary tech pioneer.
Fassbender takes on the lead role in the upcoming biopic Steve Jobs, but he isn’t the first to have stepped into Jobs’ shoes. Ashton Kutcher previously played him in the film Jobs.
While promoting the movie at New York Film Festival, he was asked how he prepared for the role, he quipped: “I studied Ashton Kutcher.”
The German-Irish actor is being tipped for an Oscar for his performance in the film written by Aaron Sorkin and directed by Danny Boyle.
But Fassbender admitted the first thing he did was to point out to Boyle that he did not have the right look for the role.
“Obviously I don’t look anything like Steve Jobs. That was the first thing I said to Danny. I said ‘Christian Bale looks a lot more like Steve Jobs than me’.”
But Boyle said he was not looking for a lookalike.
“He was like, ‘I’m not interested in that, I just want to get the energy and essence of the man and go with that’.
“So from the beginning the approach was to not try and emulate or copy that look, so basically the only thing that I did was put in brown contacts.”
And it seems Boyle was right. Steve Jobs is already receiving award-season Buzz.
“He completely owns the screen,” said Variety, despite his character being “very unlikeable throughout” the film.
“You get the strong sense from Fassbender of a mind that is always several steps beyond everyone else’s,” agreed The Hollywood Reporter.
Co-star Kate Winslet hasn’t stopped gushing about Fassbender either.
“He’s an extraordinary actor and I’ve never seen such professional behavior by an actor, he was just amazing,” Winslet, 40, told PEOPLE at the New York Film Festival premiere of the film. “He set the bar really very high for all of us. We were so lucky to have him.”
