We review Olympus Has Fallen – Thrilling action, no brain required

I once heard Training Day helmer Antoine Fuqua’s last name pronounced not as “Few-Kwa”, but rather as “F@#$ Yeah”. Never has that slip of the tongue been more fitting than with Olympus Has Fallen, the first of two (that we know of) “terrorists take over the White House” action flicks for 2013. If you’re a fan of skop, skiet en donner, you’ll be happy to know that all three are in abundant supply here. Just don’t be surprised to find that just as Olympus is falling, so too is your IQ.

While every reviewer and his pet monkey seems to be making Die Hard analogies when reviewing Olympus Has Fallen, I think they’re barking up the wrong action hero. See, Fuqua was the man once tasked with bringing the counter-terrorist adventures of 24‘s Jack Bauer to the big screen before the feature film adaptation of that acclaimed TV series fell apart, and it’s clear to me that a lot of his ideas didn’t get thrown into the waste paper basket along with Kiefer Sutherland’s contract. This is essentially a feature length, big budget 24 episode, with a couple of swear words and some more explicit violence thrown into the mix, because, you know, edgy.

Stepping into Sutherland’s blood spattered shoes is Gerard Butler, who has been churning out damp squib movie after lame duck film lately and who desperately needs one in the win column again before he turns into the male Katherine Heigl. And he certainly gets it as he turns in a really solid, 100% badass performance as ex Secret Service agent, Mike Banning. Once the head of security for and pretty good friends with US President Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart), Banning’s been demoted of sorts to the security detail at the Treasury Building down the street from the White House, after a making a tough call during a car accident that ended with him saving the President’s life but watching the First Lady (Ashley Judd) die.

Banning is bored in his new glorified security guard post and wants back in, and lucky for him – but unlucky for all the civilians whose bodies are about to be rudely introduced to the deadly bits of a heavily fortified C-130 transport plane – he gets it, when a small army of North Korean terrorists launch a simultaneous ground and air assault on the White House just as a South Korean delegation is meeting with the President. A couple of backstabs later and President Asher and his top ranking staff find themselves locked up and held hostage in a fortified underground bunker.

Luckily for them though, Banning was on hand to ventilate some North Korean skulls and managed to fight his way across the corpse strewn lawn and into the White House before the terrorists overran it completely and put it on lockdown. Now he’s Speaker of the House turned acting-President Allen Trumbull’s (Morgan Freeman, who else?) only man on the inside who can save the President and stop dastardly North Korean terrorist leader Kang (Rick Yune) who wants to yadda yadda, boom boom, maniacal laugh maniacal laugh.

The reason why I didn’t elaborate on the plot is not just to keep you spoiler free, but rather because the script that writers Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt have come up with is rather ridiculous in places. Unless you follow my advice and set your brain to neutral, you’re going to end up spending a lot of the film’s 120 minute running time going “But what about…?” and “Why would they…?” and maybe even blurting out a couple “Now that is just stupid!”‘s as governments reveal silly plans and Secret Service agents prove why they don’t have the “Intelligence” bit in their organization’s name as well.

All of that time and breath should rather be spent marveling at Fuqua’s superb action directing. From the film’s straight-out-of-a-videogame assault on the White House, to watching Gerard Butler unleash unholy violent hand to hand combat hell on every Asian fellow unfortunate enough to cross his path, the film’s action sequences are tense and visceral. Filmed with a breathless pace that relies more on masterly, brutal choreography rather than just making the cameraman have a seizure, it’s all really impressive stuff and should leave most action junkies grinning. Even when the action slows down, the film refuses to pull any punches as bad guys kick the wrinkles out of middle age ladies and Banning reveals that he’s not an avid student of the Geneva Conventions. Much like his 24 template, Banning is very good at doing some pretty bad things and he has zero problem in doing them to get the job done. And Butler completely sells it.

As President Asher, Eckhart turns in a decent performance and the same can be said for Angela Bassett, who plays head of Secret Service and Banning’s ex-boss Lynne Jacobs, while President God Morgan Freeman plays President God Morgan Freeman just the way you expect him to. Melissa Leo aka the middle aged lady being beat up in the paragraph above, just like she does in just about everything she’s in, briefly steals the spotlight as she turns in a particularly spirited performance as Secretary of Defense Ruth McMillan. On the opposite side of the moral and on-screen charisma divide though, Rick Yune is asked to merely glower at the camera while making ultimatums and he does that affably enough, I guess, but his Kang is about as unmemorable a villain as you can get.

Not that his character actually stands a chance of being remembered among all the incredible gunfire and explosions and lots of knives being buried in brains. Not yours though, because you clearly checked your brain in at the door so as to enjoy this film the way it should be.

In our exclusive interview, the ultimate badass talks about gladiator workouts, action-loving women, and training for his new film Olympus Has Fallen.

The last time we saw Gerard Butler, he was begging Jessica Biel to take him back in a movie that made our girlfriends cry. (Yeah, we miss Leonidas, too.) But fear not! It seems the badass Butler, whose abs we envied in 300, is back with his latest film, Olympus Has Fallen. Butler plays secret service agent Mike Banning, who's in the midst of a White House takeover. As the only living agent left after a massacre—and of course the only one who conveniently knows almost all of the White House passwords—it's up to him to save the president, the president's son, and Morgan Freeman's ass (Freeman has to step in as acting president once POTUS is taken hostage). To find out how Butler trained to play a secret service agent, and what he actually thinks of the film, we sat down (actually, he paced the room) with the constantly-cursing Scotsman while he was promoting the film in NYC.

MF: It can't be easy, talking about such an intense movie for an entire day.
GB: Look, if I'm being honest, not to diminish what the movie's about, but it's entertainment. It's fun, a riot in fact. The more scared people get, the more fun they have at the cinema. Yes, I want to provoke them, inspire them, and make them think. But I also want them to have a good time.
You produced this movie, along with a handful of other films you've starred in. How has that experience been for you?
I love it. But sometimes when I'm working I wish that I was allowed to only do the acting, because I'll be in the middle of dealing with a crisis and I'm arguing with somebody, and the director walks in and goes "You're on!" and I say "On what?" and he goes "You know, that big scene." And I'm just like "F*ck. Sh*t. Yeah, okay!" Over time I've learned that I have to calculate where and when I'm needed. I have to figure out what scenes are tough and important enough to say to the other producers, "Let's not talk about this right now. Meet me when I'm done with this scene. Or when they turn the camera around on the other actor." [Laughs]. But really, I love being so involved.
Well there are definitely some big scenes in Olympus Has Fallen. Did you do all your own stunts?
Yeah, I did. I pretty much do all my own stunts, unless the insurance company literally won't allow me to. After I was held underwater by a massive wave during the filming of Chasing Mavericks, they were like "Yeah...you're not going out there again." I'd love to do all my own stunts, but I paid a price for that accident. I forgot about that when I started this film though, and was throwing myself all over the place.
But after that near-death experience, the danger of Olympus Has Fallen didn't deter you?
No! I mean listen, I fired a bullet one time and it hit the pillar and came back and hit me in the eye. I felt like I had been punched in the eyeball. And that's terrifying. When you're using weaponry that powerful, even a blank bullet could blow off a person's face if it's close enough. I was so shocked when I used my gun at first. I put it next to a peach and fired with a blank bullet, and just the pressure from the gun blew a hole in the peach. So you're dealing with dangerous situations and using a lot of powerful, high-velocity weaponry, firing a lot of bullets. I got burnt in the throat by Dylan's [McDermott] cigarette and it scabbed up in my throat. I broke two bones in my throat. Bruised my arm and the back of my leg, fell from heights, got slapped around. You're just always getting cuts and bruises on a set like this. But that's what makes it real, and why I keep going back.
How did you train for this role?
We worked with Navy SEALs and ex-special forces; our stunt coordinator was special forces. I also worked very closely with secret service agents. They were on set for most of the filming to make sure we were doing everything correctly. I would pick their brains, asking them what they would do in certain situations, what they would say. You have to go in there ready to look and feel like a badass 100%. I'd get in there and tell the stunt guys, "Give me a mixture of what you would actually do, and what just looks f*cking cool." I always try to make it believable. Sometimes when the stunt guys are showing you how to fight, they give you something a little stunt-y to do, but I tell them I want to get real--down, dirty, and badass. I want to get hurt, I want to hurt them. I want it to look like a real fight. Mike Banning is a guy who is well-trained, so I had to train enough so that you believed I was well-trained. He's against some well-trained sons of b*tches--those commandos are as good as they come, and he's up against 42 of them, so if I was going to defeat them, I wanted you to believe that I actually could defeat them.
The movies you've done recently require a different type of training than the movie 300 did. How did you bring that gladiator workout into your real life and get yourself back to the "average-guy" body type?
Well for Chasing Mavericks (2012), I had to look like a surfer, and a surfer's body is much leaner. So I obviously started surfing, but I've also gotten into yoga and cleanses. I've lightened up on the weight lifting. I do lots of cardio. Mike Banning may not look like Leonidas, but he's like him in some ways; he breaks the rules, he's brutal, and he's uncompromising. Like 300, Olympus Has Fallen is ultimately a hero's journey.
You definitely have mastered the balance of intriguing male and female audiences. Women love your romantic comedies, and guys love your action films.
I actually believe women are really into action films. I'm amazed at how much they love horror movies--way more than I do. A good action movie has horror and action. If it's just pure action, you're way less likely to get the women. I think this movie is very emotional; there's a beautiful friendship between the president's kid and myself, and of course the president and myself.
Yeah, it's a bit of a "bromance."
Well, these are guys I've worked with for years. The secret service agents hang out together outside of work. They are my friends, so there's some emotion there when their lives are at risk. There's also the relationship with my wife, which is tested at the start of the movie. Then there's the emotion of the situation itself, and seeing how people come together, how we team up and let our differences fall away in a fight against something bigger. I don't think that's a man/woman thing. It's not an American thing, it's a universal principle--belief and emotion.

Ну вот и я посмотрела наконецто падение. Если вкратце сказать, то мне понравилось. И даже очень. А что? Кто у нас там был единоличный спасатель мира? Уиллис? Так вот свято место пусто не бывает. Чем наш Джер хуже всех остальных, кому такие роли не помешали заработать денег и быть знаменитым долгие годы. Джер справился естественно на мильен процентов из ста. И всякие погрешности фильма, то бишь как мгновенная смерть всего встречного народа от града пуль при нападении корейцев, но только не героя Джери, божеупаси (он как терминатор, его ничем не взять) мне совершенно не мешали. Я целиком и полностью погружаюсь в игру этого актера в его мимику, жесты, юмор и существую как бы параллельно с сюжетом, могу отключаться на мгновение от процесса, если на экране много Джерри. Наверное если посмотреть данный сюжет с другим актером, то можно будет вычленить моменты для придирки. Очень хочу глянуть аналог фильма с Татумом для сравнения. Я целиком и полностью считаю, что этот фильм удался и готова орать об этом на каждом углу!!!! Ты мой герой Джер!!!!!!! Еххххууу!!!!

Judge Allows 'Olympus Has Fallen' Writer Lawsuit to Continue (Exclusive)

The last chapter has not been written on Olympus Has Fallen, the film starring Gerard Butler as the man who saves the president from kidnappers after a terrorist attack on the White House.
The movie was released in March by Film District and has grossed nearly $100 million in domestic box office, but behind the scenes, an interesting fight has broken out over between two writers who claim credit for the film.
Creighton Rothenberger, the film's credited screenwriter, first filed a lawsuit seeking a declaration that he is the sole author. But it was the counterclaims made by his former partner John S. Green that provided the juice for a California federal judge's ruling on Monday.
Judge Josephine Staton Tucker has denied Rothenberger's motion to dismiss Green's counterclaims, and in doing so, sets the stage for a forthcoming exploration on the nature of creative writing partnerships.
Olympus Has Fallen had been gestating since May 2002, when Rothenberger and Green together discussed a movie about terrorists taking over the White House. The two are said to have traveled to Washington D.C. to walk the perimeter of what was then George W. Bush's home and get started on writing a treatment.
Green claims it was his idea to call the film, "Olympus Has Fallen."
A 41-page treatment was registered by the pair with the WGA that year, but when the screenplay was finished the following year, it didn't sell. The project languished until 2009 when the two began working on it again. Then it was set aside again until 2011 when Rothenberger claims he found a new manager and the Gersh Agency agreed to represent him.
In 2012, the screenplay for Olympus Has Fallen was completed and it then sold, but Rothenberger allegedly failed to disclose that Green had been a co-author. Green's counterclaims sought a declaration of copyright co-ownership, an accounting between copyright co-owners, breach of partnership agreement and breach of fiduciary duty.
In a motion to dismiss, Rothenberger sought to have the claims of copyright co-ownership barred under the three-year statute of limitations since a 2002 copyright registration failed to list Green. Rothenberger says this put Green on notice that he expressly repudiated co-ownership more than a decade ago.
Throughout the years, there have been many famous legal battles involving creative partnerships — perhaps none more famous than the war that broke out between Todd McFarlane and Neil Gaiman over Spawn.
In fact, that case informs Judge Tucker's ruling (read in full here) to allow Green to go forward with his claims. As the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals once ruled, "Authors don’t consult the records of the Copyright Office to see whether someone has asserted copyright in their works."
The judge says that mere failure to list a name on copyright registration records isn't enough to rise to repudiation and start the clock on when Green had to assert his claim.
"Green has alleged some facts supporting his argument Rothenberger 'lulled' him into believing that Rothenberger was treating Green as a co-author," adds Judge Tucker. And if Rothenberger has other arguments besides the copyright registration, "the pleadings stage is not the time to resolve the inherently factual inquiry of when Rothenberger 'communicated' to Green his express repudiation."
As to the cross-claim of breach of partnership agreement, Rothenberger argued that Green failed to allege sufficient material terms to constitute an enforceable contract. But the judge highlights an alleged intention to share profits. And as for what the judge says are "purported deficiencies" like the duration of the agreement, the judge says a fact-finder will determine "whether an oral partnership contract existed and, if so, what was the reasonable period implied for the partnership’s continuance."
So the case goes forward and could hold some interesting implications.
As Ed McPherson, the attorney for Green, tells THR, "The one thing the studio does not seem to understand is that, if our client wins, he has the same right to transfer sequel rights as Rothenberger, and he certainly does not have to sell it to them."
Green is represented by McPherson and Tracy Rane at McPherson Rane. Rothenberger is being represented by Michael Weinsten and David Jonelis of Lavely & Singer
